CT Scanner Room Refurbishment, Singleton Hospital, Swansea

Singleton Hospital is one of the main acute hospital sites serving Swansea Bay University Health Board. When the Health Board required the full refurbishment of a single-room CT scanner suite, R&M Williams were appointed to deliver a complex programme of works within a live clinical environment.

The room presented an immediate structural challenge. With a 500mm-thick concrete roof installed specifically to contain radiation, conventional penetration methods were not an option. To accommodate the new mechanical and electrical ducting, our team core-drilled five penetrations through the roof slab. Because the roof surface was not level, a bespoke structural section was designed and built to provide a true, stable base from which the ductwork could be correctly set out and supported. It was a practical solution to a practical problem, and it kept the programme on track.

From there, the project was a full strip and reinstatement. The room was taken back to a bare shell: all existing mechanical and electrical services were removed, roof voids were opened up and rebuilt, and a new suspended ceiling system was installed throughout. The entire space was fully rewired, with all new M&E installed from first fix through to commissioning. New kitchen provisions were incorporated, along with basins and all associated pipework, bringing the suite fully up to current standards.

The scope of works broadened during the project. Additional items were identified and instructed by the client, with the programme absorbing the extras without impact on delivery. The project was completed to programme across a 17-week period, finishing in December 2025.

Working within a hospital setting demanded careful coordination with the Health Board at every stage. Access, infection control, and continuity of hospital operations were managed throughout, with our team maintaining a clean, professional presence on site from start to finish.

The finished suite provides Singleton Hospital with a fully operational, code-compliant CT scanning environment, fit for purpose and built to last.
