Morriston Hospital Refurbishment and Fit-out of new Gamma Scanner area

We completed the refurbishment, reconfiguration, and fitout of the Morriston Hospital new CT Gamma Scanner area. The works took place within a live hospital environment, adjoining the existing patient and current scanner areas. Access to site was available only from communal corridors, including for material deliveries, so collaborative planning was essential to ensure we minimise disruption.

We integrated the full M&E upgrade with the existing system within the hospital, including IT/secure access/intercoms. We also provided new washroom facilities in the reconfigured space – segregated as ‘hot’(for use by people post-scan/treatment) and ‘cold’ (for use by staff/public). We completed the works and full decoration package, integrating bespoke artwork and displays. We worked closely with Linda Davies, Superintendent Radiographer, consulting on design and design application for the CT scanner from inception to completion. We also worked closely with specialist subcontractors to deliver lead lining to ceilings and walls and specialist doors, ensuring hospital staff had ample time to test the that the protection in place for the scanning chamber is adequate, as part of our schedule of testing and commissioning. Weekly works coordination meetings were held between R&MW manager and client project manager.

Cleanliness was a key consideration – we worked closely with Infection Control, checking access areas daily and making sure all spaces through which we moved construction materials and tradespeople were clean at all times.

Site access for material and people, and well as for waste removal required close collaboration with key stakeholder from pre-start to completion. Starting with the Design team from Stride Treglown, and continuing with the Client representative and key hospital stakeholders, we created a strict schedule for material deliveries, at times when the ward and scanner areas were most quiet. We required 5m3 of concrete to fill a void identified in the floor of the site, which needed to be secured before the fitout, especially considering the weight of the Gamma Scanner and lead-lined equipement. To pour concrete in the area required, without interfering with the interior of the hospital, we temporarily removed a window at the north end of the site, and poured using a flexible boom directly from the A&E carpark, through an adjacent bathroom.

Our delivery of this project on time and to budget showcases our capacity to work on complex projects, while keeping all stakeholders involved and informed in the process – working closely with specialist subcontractors FP Hurley (Mechanical) and Philips Services Wales (electrical, AV/IT) as well as with specialist suppliers who installed and connected the scanner.
